Topical Tips

For October 2006

·         You should have finished feeding by now, unless you are using fondant.

·         Varroa treatment should also be finished, so do remember to take out strips if using Apistan/Bayvarol.

·         Check that your varroa treatment has worked by counting daily mite drop.  If it has not worked and you are using Apistan then you have resistant mites.

·         Make sure that hives are weatherproof and that roofs will not blow off.

·         Protect hives from woodpeckers where they are a problem; use wire netting or strong plastic sacks.

·         Protect against mice, either by reducing the entrance to no more than ¼" (approx 6.5mm) high, or by putting on mouseguards - before the mice move in.

·         Supers can be left on the hives until the weather turns cold and wax moths are no longer a problem - probably towards the end of the month.  They are then best stored in a cold place - a shed, or outdoors under cover - with screens top and bottom to prevent mice nesting in them.

·         Tidy up the apiary so that there is nothing to blow around.  Have a good look at any trees near your hives and prune or remove them if in a dangerous condition.

·         Prune hedges and cut down vegetation so that hives get plenty of light during the winter months.

·         Ensure that hives stands are in good condition and will keep hives well above damp ground and above any potential flood risk.
