Topical Tips
For November 2001
First, my apologies for the delay in posting these notes - we have been on a well deserved holiday!
- Varroa treatment.
If using Bayvarol or Apistan remember to remove the strips after six weeks to avoid breeding resistant mites. Oxalic acid can be used in broodless colonies to clean up bees for the winter; however, many colonies still have a considerable amount of brood due to the mild autumn, so it is probably best to wait until the end of the month.
- Winter feeding. R
emember that fondant can be used at any time throughout the winter if you have been unable to complete your feeding
- Visit out-apiaries
regularly to ensure that all is well.
- Ensure that stored equipment
is protected from mice and rats.
- Wax cappings
can now be rendered on cool or wet days without attracting large numbers of bees.
- Start planning
for next year.
