Topical Tips
For August 2003
In most areas around Stratford the flow slowed in early July and was just about finished by 21st - disappointing after the excellent flows in June. Time to remove the crop.
Varroa numbers seem fairly low in most of my colonies - surprising after the long season - but we must not become complacent. Early treatment is essential (see February 2002 newsletter) because we need healthy bees to go into winter.
Wasps are already a severe problem in many areas this year, so destroy nests, set traps and close down hive entrances, especially nucs.
Feed any light colonies early, but beware robbing.
Inspect colonies for EFB and AFB before you feed - if in doubt, ask for help.
