The HGSC is currently sequencing the honey bee, Apis mellifera. The honey bee is important in the agricultural community as a producer of honey and as a facilitator of pollination. It is a model organism for studying the following human health issues: immunity, allergic reaction, antibiotic resistance, development, mental health, longevity and diseases of the X chromosome. In addition, biologists are interested in the honey bee's social instincts and behavioral traits. |

Honey bees have recently received considerable attention from the popular press as an innovative method to detect a variety of explosives, landmines and UXO. Many of these reports are inaccurate and may encourage individuals and demining groups to “sell” a service that they poorly understand or lack the experience to properly apply. As the developers of this technology, we offer the following summary about the current status of this alternative for landmine detection, including its strengths and limitations. |

The WaspBane wasp trap is the result of more than 6 years of design and experimentation. The apparently simple design hides a host of features each exploiting particular aspects of wasp behaviour which makes WaspBane probably the most efficient wasp trap available on the market today. Given that wasps are a dangerous insect, the design of WaspBane has been built entirely around user safety so much so that WaspBane is also probably the safest wasp trap on the market to date. |

The Guide to Beekeeping for Adults and Kids |
Beekeeping is the term used to describe human maintenance of a colony of honeybees. A beekeeper usually keeps his bees in hives contained in a “bee yard.” The beekeeper maintains the beehives so that he can collect beeswax, honey, pollen and propolis. A beekeeper may also maintain the hives so that the bees will pollinate his crops. Finally, beekeepers may use the hives to produce new generations of bees for sale to other beekeepers. | |

Top Bar Hive Beekeeping |

Bumble Bees Dying |
There’s due concern about the fact that bumble bees are dying in the United
States as well as other parts of the world. Researchers are baffled by the
phenomenon because there seems to be no clear evidence which explains why the
population of bumble bees is declining. In the commercial sense. |

Operation Bumblebee |
Bumblebee populations on UK arable farms have declined by more than 70% over the past 30 years, primarily through loss of vital nectar food resources and nesting sites as cropping patterns have changed. One of the 20 bumblebee species has disappeared altogether, and three other species are on the verge of extinction. Now Operation Bumblebee, pioneered and funded by Syngenta, is set to put the habitat back and revive the fortunes of the humble bumblebee across the entire UK arable farming area. Over 1000 farmers are now being sought to join the new national scheme, with each committed to establishing at least a hectare (2.5 acres) of specific Operation Bumblebee seed mix. |
